保護歯周組織；歯肉【ほごししゅうそしき；しにく】 Part of the gingiva nearest the tooth. Its inner junctional epithelium is partly attached to the enamel thus preserving the continuity of the epithelium of the oral cavity. It closes the roots of teeth off from the oral cavity. Collagen fibers extending from the alveolar process or supra-alveolar root cement into the subepithelial connective tissue, or surrounding the tooth, ensure root enclosure. They stabilize the position of the teeth and align them in an uninterrupted dental arcade.(歯肉は上顎および下顎の歯槽突起は口腔粘膜で被われており、その結合組織は固く骨膜と癒着している。頬または口唇と歯肉の間の移行帯ではこれに対し、この結びつきはゆるく、ここでは炎症過程によって粘膜がもり上がることがある（このときにはしばしば鼻唇溝やオトガイ唇溝が消失する）。外縁上皮は歯槽突起の外面の粘膜上皮であって、厚みがあり高い乳頭突起でもって粘膜結合組織としっかり咬み合っており、ところどころで角化がみられることがある。内縁上皮は歯槽の上縁を越えて、歯頚に達し歯根膜を上から被っている。)
